This cover is inspired by an original design by the legendary but little-known 17th-century bookbinder, (Le) Gascon. Le Gascon was the inventor of the pointillé and fanfare styles, and his influence is found in the rich history of bookbinding. Covers based on Le Gascon's style but not made by him are by other French masters. The 'Le Gascon' style covers and bindings first appeared in the reign of Charles IX. The complexity of the decorations is surprising.
